Electrical Installation
Electrical Installation is a process that shouldn't be taken lightly; even the smallest mistakes can result in severe consequences. This is why it is always best to enlist the help of a professional when it come to doing any electrical installation or repairs as part of your property maintenance. The job of an electrician is to determine the wires that are needed for a particular home or business and to provide your property with adequate power in the safest possible way.
Electrical Installation covers a range of tasks such as simple things like changing a light switch through to more complex work i.e. wiring your basement. Electrical Installation is also the process of insulating conductors used to carry electricity.
Different Electrical Installation jobs require different material. Wiring interior electrical systems in buildings can vary, depending on:
- Intended use and amount of power needed of the circuit
- Type of occupancy and size of the building
- National and local regulations
- Environment in which wiring must operate
In the United Kingdom wiring installations are regulated by and produced by the IEE Requirements for Electrical Installations: IEE Wiring Regulations, BS 7671: 2001 which is now in its 16th edition. The first edition was published in 1882.
In the UK the electrical power circuits used in properties are normally described as either radial or ring. A radial circuit is where power is transmitted from point to point by a single length of cable linking each point to the next. This starts at the main switch or fuse and terminates at the last connected device. It may branch at a connection point. Lighting circuits are normally wired in this way, but it may also be used for low power socket circuits.
Tools are very important to the work undertaken by an electrician when performing property maintenance and renovation work, no matter how small the job may be. Some of these tools are listed below:
- Linemans pillars - these are heavy duty and normally used for cutting, bending, crimping and pulling wire
- Hammers
- Screwdrivers
- Saws
- Drills
- Wire Strippers - these have special blades to cut wire gauge.
The level of work needed in an Electrical Installation more than often depends on the nature of the property. In family homes the building structure is one that has dry, moderate temperatures and is a non-corrosive environment, meaning it has relatively low power requirements. In a more commercial environment you should expect more frequent wiring changes and the need for larger apparatus to be installed. In heavy duty industries there is a much higher demand for wiring requirements due to the need for large currents and higher voltages as well as frequent changes of equipment layout and corrosive, wet or even explosive atmospheres.
