Plastering
Plastering has been used in building/construction industries for centuries. It dates back as one of the oldest handicrafts of all. Plastering is mainly done in the interior of a property, whether it be on an interior wall, decorative moulding's or on ceilings.
There are two main types of plaster, Gypsum and Cement. Cement is rarely used in plastering on the interior of a property unless a damp part of the property needs plastering; otherwise cement is kept for outdoor use. Gypsum is used for plastering on the interior of a property; it should never be used outdoors as damp conditions will cause Gypsum to crumble.
Modern plasters come already mixed with perlite, vermiculite and several other additives. These additives provide a greater degree of insulation and fire resistance. Other ingredients slow down the setting time and generally make the mixture more workable. This means that the only thing we need to add to plaster is water. When plastering materials with differing absorption, it is a good idea to key the surfaces to be plastered with a PVA bonding sealer. This prevents the plaster 'going off' (setting) at different speeds.
A good plasterer knows that when adding plaster to water you should do so in equal measurements, using a clean bucket when doing so. When the plaster is a creamy constituency it should be poured onto a piece of ply around 1m square, known as a spot board. The trowel is then used to load plaster onto the hawk.
Depending on the condition of the walls that need plastering depends on how many base layers you will need to build up a good smooth surface for your finishing layer. Base layers may be applied over each other while the previous one is still damp but it must be firm.
